Comment

I am deeply saddened by Tony Hammond’s passing. I knew Tony personally, I liked and respected him a great deal.

In the roughouse world of mining, Tony stood out as an honest gentleman, totally focused on delivering value to shareholders of Colonial Coal.

Tony turned a small hole in the ground found by accident when making a car park into the Great Orme Mines, a wonderful educational facility for visitors to the Great Orme in Llandudno, North Wales.

The visitor centre Tony created allows people to experience what working in a Roman copper mine was like two thousand years ago.

Colonial Coal – Warren Irwin Interview

Colonial Coal (TSX.V: CAD)

Top Canadian Fund manager Warren Irwin, of Rosseau Asset Manager is interviewed about his opinion of Colonial Coal.

This is a rare opportunity to hear the thoughts of a successful fund manager talking about a single stock he knows intimately.

Warren expands at some length about the company and his thoughts for future monitization.

As a shareholder myself I thought it well worth listening to the whole interview, which lasts around 40 minutes.

To listen to the interview, which is hosted on Youtube, please click here.

With deals being done in the Peace River region, as well as in other countries around the world such as Australia, Colonial’s large tonnage assets are starting to stand out as one of the few major deposits still in the hands of a junior.

I do feel that with other deals now completed it’s only a matter of time before the first bid arrives for one of the few remaining large deposits of quality coking coal available in a tier one jurisdiction.

CEO David Austin has founded two coking coal companies in this region of Canada that went on to be taken out by majors, with Western Canadian Coal going for $3.2 billion to Walter Energy.

Colonial is taking longer to conclude a deal, and there have been some mitigating circumstances such as covid, and Canada’s relations with India and China being volatile in recent times. These relations have become warmer and more stable in recent times.

I am a long-term holder of Colonial Coal shares, and plan to hold until the company is acquired or participates in a corporate deal.

Comment

Colonial Coal have been caught in a triple vortex of news all coming together that resulted in one spooked investor dumping 350,000 shares into the market in one go early Thursday morning, and hammering down the shareprice as a result.

This was amateur hour, and cost the seller severely as the price plunged, as buyers retreated as they saw the size of the volume on the ask.

The events that led up to this were the announcement by Tech that they have done a deal with Conuma in respect of their Peace River assets, when some thought Colonial may have been looking for that deal, the Sukunka licence denial announcement by Glencore, and of course the old favourite, Canadian tax loss selling.

Colonial could have taken any one of these events in it’s stride, maybe two, but all three at the same time?  Sadly it spooked someone, and they panic sold without trying to place the stock first, or sell in small chunks, and that caused today’s price slump.

The price recovered from the 96 cent low to finish around CAD$1.10
