PDAC 2020 attendance down 10%

   PDAC 2020

Attendance at the Prospectors & Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) 2020 Convention totalled 23,144 people.

This was approximately ten percent less than 2019.

There were probably three contributing factors.

Attendance at the Prospectors & Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) 2020 Convention totalled 23,144 people. This was approximately ten percent less than 2019.

There were probably three contributing factors;

  • The Coronavirus and a lack of Chinese delegates
  • A poorly performing mining sector with falling share prices for around a year
  • The CAD$25 admission fee.

The virus certainly accounted for some, including people I know personally. There were hardly any Chinese delegates this year, almost certainly as a result of their own travel restrictions and quarantined cities.

.

Over the past year, the junior exploration and development mining stocks traded on the Toronto Venture Exchange have generally performed very poorly and many share prices have fallen considerably. This means there was precious little for investors to get excited about, people losing money are less likely to embark on a costly jurney and then get ripped off by ridiculous accommodation prices into the bargain.

.

The CAD$25 per day admission fee probably put off the more causal local investor, maybe only attending on one day rather than all four days.  The Wednesday morning half day in a near deserted hall early on is not worth attending, yet PDAC still charge the full daily fee for this, quite ridiculous in my opinion.

.

I would make Wednesday free, and tell all CEO’s to attend their booths from 10.30 am onwards, that would really energise the final day!  But I won;t hold my breath…
