PDAC 2021 live show cancelled

PDAC 2021 – Live show cancelled

It has just been announced that the PDAC 2021, the world’s largest mining trade show held annually in Toronto, has been cancelled, and will run virtually instead.

This is a huge decision, and made early, after the criticism of running the event this year, 2020, when delegates caught covid 19 at the show, including five from London, one of whom was on a ventilator at one point.

PDAC 2021 – Live show cancelled

It has just been announced that the PDAC, the world’s largest mining trade show held annually in Toronto, has been cancelled, and will run virtually instead. This is a huge decision, and quite rightly one made early, following the criticism of running the event this year, 2020, when delegates caught covid 19 at the show, including five from London, one of whom was on a ventilator at one point.

.

Having attended every show since 2006, except 2009, this is hugely disappointing, but the correct decision, in my opinion. I enjoy the buzz and optimism the show normally brings as an investor, there’s always new stories to hear as well as connecting with friends and companies from previous years.

.

I’m grateful they announced this early as I nearly booked a flight three days ago when Westjet offered me a good discount.  Had I done so the next step would have been to book the accommodation, so very relieved I waited, I was so close to booking.

.

This of course will mean a real loss to the city of Toronto, with around 25,000 people normally flying in and occupying all the hotels and AirBnB apartments in the city. I don’t feel sorry for those hotels that gouge people for astronomical rates for basic rooms just because the show is on. It’s nothing short of criminal to increase rates by 300% just for the few days of the show.

.

I had always wanted to stay at the iconic Royal York Hotel, but the rates were ridiculous, so two years ago as I was arriving a day early I managed to obtain their normal rate and treat myself to one night of luxury before moving to my apartment.

.

I’m not so sure it will be easy to recreate this show virtually using Zoom or Skype, the unintended meetings at the coffee area or at the bar in the evening just won’t be possible, and it will just be another video conference like the recent 121 and Mines and Money shows I think.

.

Let’s hope the vaccines are available soon and we can all go back to conferencing as it should be, with personal meetings and engagement, there simply isn’t a better way to build trust.
