London’s first live mining conference for 23 months was very well attended, and the networking sessions were buzzing, as people interacted face to face again, finally.

Three well delivered company presentations were made, by Caledonia Mining, Beowulf Mining, and Rainbow Rare Earths, covering three distinct areas of the metals markets, precious metals, bulk commodities, and advanced metals.

The four expert keynote speakers gave thought provoking opinions were, Amanda Van Dyke, Alain Corbani, Rayma Aman, and Ross Norman.

London’s first live mining conference for 23 months was very well attended, and the networking sessions were buzzing, as people interacted face to face again, finally.

Three well delivered company presentations were made, by Caledonia Mining, Beowulf Mining, and Rainbow Rare Earths, covering three distinct areas of the metals markets, precious metals, bulk commodities, and advanced metals.

The four expert keynote speakers gave thought provoking opinions were, Amanda Van Dyke, Alain Corbani, Rayma Aman, and Ross Norman.

It really was a bit daunting to organise the first live mining conference to be held for nearly two years, and the great uncertainty was whether, with many working from home, would people  attend?

The emphatic answer was yes!  After a quiet early start on the day, causing a few nerves to be frayed, the Livery Hall filled up, and extra seats had to be added at the back of the room, as some people were standing.

The proceedings were opened by Rama Ayman, CEO of MMG Capital, and his subject was “raising Finance in the current mining market place“.

Rama has an enjoyed an extensive career in metals and mining corporate finance. MMG Capital is an independent global metals and mining corporate finance and private equity advisory firm.

Caledonia Mining followed with CFO Mark Learmonth making the first mining corporate presentation.

Caledonia have been successfully mining gold in Zimbabwe for many years, repatriating earnings, and paying their shareholders a dividend.

In addition, they are now exploring other opportunities in the country, that are available at below normal market norms, where their experience, and good relationship with the government, enable them to take opportunities as they become available.

The year 2022 will see a significant increase in production.

Alain Corbani is the Head of Mining and Portfolio Manager of the Global Gold and Precious Fund, Finance SA, Paris, France.  Finance SA is an independent asset management group with institutional and private investors.

Alain is a very successful fund manager, with a long track record, and recently has beaten  his peers in France three years in a row.

The first session was closed out by Ross Norman, CEO of Metals Daily, and the former founder and CEO of bullion dealer Sharps Pixley.

Ross is a former gold trader at NM Rothschild & Sons (then the Chairman of the London Gold Fixing) and later Credit Suisse Bank.

Ross spoke about “the outlook for gold“.

The second session opened with a presentation by Kurt Budge, CEO of Beowulf Mining, who spoke about “delivering the raw materials critical for the transition to a green economy”

Beowulf have three key business areas; iron ore utilising hydro electric power in Sweden, graphite for lithium-ion battery nodes, and base metals mined in Europe leading to a shorter supply chain, thus reducing their carbon footprint.

The final corporate presentation was made by George Bennett, CEO of Rainbow Rare Earths, exploring for the metals that are critical for technological advancement, but hard to find in economic quantities.

George presented the topic “NdPr, powering the green revolution“.

Rainbow’s projects are located in Phalaborwa in South Africa, and Gakara, in Burundi. Gakara has one of the world’s highest TREO grades, at 54%, achieved during trial mining operations.

The final presentation of the conference was made by Amanda Van Dyke, Managing Director of ARCH Emerging Markets Partners, and her topic was “the future of metals demand and what it means for junior mining
