Mines and Money London – Day 1

Mines and Money,  Mines and technology Day started quietly, with not too many people in attendance, despite the fact that you could meet companies from the main show for 1 2 1 meetings.

.

The floor was shut as the exhibitors erected their booths, all systems are go for tomorrow though.

,

My arrival at the show was delayed by some three hours due to being stuck on a train behind one that caught fire, stranding us in the middle of nowhere, without a phone or WIFI signal, nor the ability to buy a drink as the vendor’s card machine was also down!

.

As a result I missed two meetings, and then I arrived at registration, and promptly missed a third meeting due to the slowness of the system, and lack of organisation on behalf of the organisers.

.

At the 121 Mining forums attendees are given upon arrival a pre-printed badge, and a printed meeting schedule, all in a plastic folder. It takes seconds and is smooth and efficient. At Mines and Money you have to wait for the badge to be printed, and they could not print a meeting schedule. Upon being referred to a second desk, and waiting around ten minutes for people in front, it was frustrating to be told I had to hang on whilst a person on the phone became free to assist.

.

Giving up waiting  in sheer frustration, I went to the cafe and logged onto my laptop and viewed my schedule that way, and the time that had elapsed whilst doing this meant I had missed another meeting, so not a good start!

.

I attended the auditorium for my fourth meeting and was met by a lady who was trying to organise companies at numbered tables and the people waiting to meet them.  She was doing a good job in somewhat trying circumstances in my opinion, they have a lot to learn about organising meetings in this way, this was clearly a work in progress!

.

The first day ended with a “Mongolian B-B-Q, and a free bottle of beer. The food, although limited, was delicious, so a better end to the day than the start.

.

Tomorrow the exhibition floor opens, for what looks like 35 listed companies in attendance. I wonder if this is a record low for the number of listed companies? I have a feeling it is, but it’s about quality not quantity, so we shall see.
